Here’s a good question for the start of summer: What do you call those insects that LIGHT UP? Are they “fireflies” or “lightning bugs”?
It turns out America is SPLIT on the subject. 44% of us say fireflies . . . 43% say lightning bugs . . . and around 1 in 20 people use a different term like “glow flies” or “moon bugs.”
“Lightning bugs” is more popular is most PARTS of the country. But people out west are more than twice as likely to say “fireflies.” And that one also seems to be trending with younger demographics. People under 25 are more than twice as likely to say “fireflies.” People over 55 are the most likely to say “lightning bugs.”
